How to get through a summer long run
Run early.
I repeat: Run early, seriously.
Think about the lazy people still in bed. Feel smug.
If you have to add a short loop to hit your miles for the day, do it at the beginning.
Run on a shady trail, preferably next to a river or a lake.
Wear light clothes made from tech fabric.
Friendly greeting to everyone else running in the heat.
Hydrate, then hydrate again.
Distract yourself by...

What's going on...
…or why a hard-boiled egg like me almost cried when the police chief died in the Spider-Man movie.
First world problems and a pity party, do or don’t read on. I’m trying not to complain but to sort things out.
[[MORE]]So, as you know I’ve been struggling with my career lately. I was right on track for most of my life, good in school, honors student, med school with a...

No complaining, the rule’s still in effect. Shush.
I don’t know what it is about Fridays, like last week I got riled again, and I had such a winning streak up till now…
Deep breath, Avengers worked like a dream to improve my mood last Friday. Today I’m voting for Spider-Man. Sitting for 2 hours in an (air-conditioned) movie theater also fulfills my requirement of a quiet...

Above all, train hard, eat right, and avoid television and people with bad...
– Scott Tinley
Yes, with a qualifier though… I find watching sports on TV can be really motivating. Looking forward to soccer tonight, semi-final!
Side note: After one of the last matches a commentator said that one of the players ‘ran amazingly far’ — a grand total of 8k, LOL.

I’m hiding the last banana from the programmer because I want to eat it tomorrow morning before my 5 miles. Mine!
I’m not the least bit sorry.

Training plans

Do you follow a plan, or is it the 007runner-plan?
Currently, I follow Hal Higdon’s Novice 1, this plan is comparatively low mileage, particularly in the first half — ideal for my knee.
For Edinburgh I did another Higdon plan, Marathon 3. I have to say that I liked that one better, 3 days of...

Be Less Crazy About Your Body →
Megan Dietz’ article about body image and how society values looks is thought provoking:
I remember being 7 or 8 years old and wondering why no one had tried to molest me yet. Was it because I was fat? My tiny brain toiled to figure it out. I didn’t even know what molesting WAS, but I already knew that my body was supposed to elicit some kind of reaction in other people — that’s what it...

I said I wouldn’t complain, so today that leaves me with not much to say… Anyway, it will be all good, TGIF. Looking forward to tonight, Avengers with the programmer and popcorn.

Out of the silver heat mirage he ran. The sky burned, and under him the paving...
– John Tarbor — A Runner
I love this description of running in the heat. It’s not too crazy here, maybe 90ºF, pretty humid though. But a proper sweat fest once in a while is strangely cleansing.

Good morning!
Must run 4 miles, no detours. Four point zero miles. I can do it.
Sauna weather, do I brave just running in my bra top? Hmm, I don’t think so, at least not when I’m running alone. Maybe next time the programmer joins.
Now, stop writing nonsense, run my 4 miles. Four point zero.
