Marathon musings
It’s marathon season here on tumblr and it’s been great to cheer people on and to read all the recaps.
But I’ve noticed quite a few posts expressing frustration or at least regrets about how the races went. I can include myself here, the whole competition with the programmer is a joke, still I’ve been a bit bummed that I didn’t win.
A couple thoughts:
- It’s easy to lose perspective, particularly here on tumblr. Sometimes it seems like everyone’s running a marathon, no biggie. Hey, the real athletes are doing ironmans and ultras, and have abs of steel. Stop it, finishing a marathon is an amazing achievement. Yes, there’s always someone fitter, let them be an inspiration but don’t make yourself smaller.
- Shoulda, woulda, coulda… Analyze your race but then move on! Use the experience to grow and set new goals.
- If you really feel the need to compare yourself with others be just and also include the people that never put themselves on the line and that stay on their couches, all comfy. Even better compare yourself to previous versions of yourself. I’m sure there was a time when you thought it impossible to run a race.
Ok, that’s it. My words for the weekend. To loosely paraphrase Bonnie Tyler: ‘Heroes, strong and fast!’
